Hentaied is the studio of the Italian director known as Romero, or Mr. Alien. Its creatures, sets and make-up draw on genre cinema and manga; the footage is live action rather than animation.

Porn built like genre cinema
Here the fantasy is not set dressing around a conventional scene; it is the product. Romero has described transformation as the heart of what the studio makes, and body horror, creatures and science-fiction premises are how it gets there.
It is also unusually physical. Creature suits, prosthetics and practical make-up are standard, and the studio builds its own sets and props, down to hospital rooms and X-ray machines at its Los Angeles space, often from equipment rescued from liquidations and junkyards. For bigger effects it has brought in VFX artists from mainstream film.
The reference points are a cinephile’s: Romero cites Sam Raimi, Park Chan-wook, Takashi Miike and Robert Rodriguez, and he reads manga every day, with Berserk, Monster and Uzumaki among his favourites.
